Double Standards
Double standards have been part of our socities and cultures for too long. You know the type that allows a boy or man to do anything but penalizes a girl or woman for doing something similiar. Society has accepted men to behave in such a way that is negative but yet makes excuses or praise them for their behaviors. When a man sleeps around or has attained different females as his girfriends’, he is viewed as a “Don”, a ‘Cassonova”, a ‘Player”, the mack, the “MAN’ and the ever popular one… a “pimp”. Look at Hugh Heftner who is the ultimate “playboy” and the envy of other men. We live in an age were Aids killing millions and a plague to the world. Cureless sexual transmitted diseases and even HPV which causes cervical cancer. When a woman sleeps around or has attained different men as her beau or boyfriends, that woman is considered a “whore”, “slut”, ‘homewrecker’ and a “slut”. Men and society view her as damaged goods . Her reputation follows her everywhere. What a double standard!!!
Some countries have killed of their first born if it was not a male. Some even offered their daughters as sacrifices and sold them off to slavery. This is happening in India and other parts of the world. Where families are selling their daughters to the highest bidder for land, into marriages with the wealthy and sex slaves. This is why human trafficking exist. If you turn on the television, most shows like Law and Order always depicts a woman being raped, sodomized or viciously murdered. The violence against women is at an all time high, men are killing their wives and girlfriends at an alarming rate. Even the domestic abuse women sustained from their husbands and boyfriends remains a problem till this day.
Is it a mans’ world? That is the question… At one point, women were not allowed to vote, work or even express their opinions. But of course with time everything changes so women fought for their rights to free speech, the right to vote and work and obtain position as their male co-workers. Has a lot changed? Is society more accepting of a woman CEO or is it intimidated by that? Does society accept women to make more money than men? Some men remain intimidated by this and let jealousy set in their hearts. Now come on, a man is not suppose to be jealous of a woman or become jealous at all. Society taught us that jealousy and envy are a women trait… now that is a double standard!!! Men have the same emotions as a women. Society also teaches us to believe that women tend to be more emotional and react with an emotional mind than men. I disagree and that is a double standard!! Even the way we raised our children is a double standard. Boys are taught to be tough, never to show emotions that are considered weak such as pain, fear, sadness nor cry. They are taught to keep things bottled up but to vent through sports, being a bully and displaying some form of violence.. Look at some of the video games that are being marketed.. Girls are raised to be princesses, show emotions that it’s okay to cry, be sad, show fear and even weaknesses. To be the damsel in distress. When a girl wants to play a sport such as ‘football’ or wants to become a ‘mechanic’, she is ridiculed and sometimes deferred from attaining those goals or dreams.
So the question remains, why do we allow such a double standard? And are women and men created equal? Or we really equal????
